The Return of Flying Scotsman

BBC Four documentary on the return of Gresley A3 4472/60103 'Flying Scotsman' to service back in 2016.
Flying Scotsman returned to steam back in January 2016 on the East Lancs Railway after a ten year long overhaul.

The Flying Scotsman is one of the best British steam locomotives! This documentary made me shed tears of happiness cause Flying Scotsman is part of a great history and the crown jewel in British Railway's history. I've never met her, however, I enjoy seeing her wherever I can - may be in video etc. RIP Sir William McAlpine.

It's an amazing thing: the emotional experience Steam Locomotives drive in the human experience. It's great to see the restoration of these old giants. Even in the United States the restoration of Big Boy 4014 brought people from all over the globe. To see young and old with moistened eyes was quite the exhilarating event to feel the earth rumbling underfoot.  I was privileged enough to talk to some great steam fans from Edinburgh, Cape Town, Christchurch and others. It was absolutely phenomenal.

Why are petrol, diesel prices rising in India?

Indians are paying a bomb for fuel despite cheap crude prices

अगर पेट्रोल डीजल के दाम इसी तरह बढ़ते रहे तो जल्द ही इस जुगाड़ की जरूरत सब को पड़ेगी

Retail prices of automobile fuels have reached record highs across the country. Petrol and diesel are taxed heavily in India, and oil price decontrol is a one-way street — the consumer never benefits.

As petrol & diesel prices continue to rise across the country, people of india are paying quadruple price for a litre of petrol compared to its crude price. Here's why.

Indians pay four times for a litre of petrol compared to its crude price, which is only around a litre of packaged drinking water. Taxes, commissions, excise and other charges levied on the end-user ensure that fuel rates do not go down significantly in India even when international crude oil prices are low.
Ideally, retail prices of petrol and diesel in the domestic market are linked to global crude prices. This means if crude prices drop in the international market, then prices in retail should come down as well. But, this is not the case, most of the time.
On the contrary, despite the 13% drop in international crude prices, Indian consumers paid 13% prices (considering the average price of petrol to be Rs. 88 per litre) between January, 2020 and January, 2021.

Petrol price breached Rs 100 mark in Rajasthan's Ganganagar district and Madhya Pradesh's Nagarabandh on Wednesday as fuel rates hiked for the ninth consecutive day. According to Indian Oil Corporation data, the retail price of non-premium petrol at Ganganagar touched Rs 100.13 per litre on February 17, 2021. Diesel price in Ganganagar is at Rs 92.13 per litre. Current petrol price in MP's Nagarabandh is Rs 100.40 per litre, as per IOCL data; whereas, the diesel is priced at Rs 90.81 per litre.

On the other hand, for the first time, petrol has jumped to Rs 96 per litre in Mumbai after oil companies hiked the price by 25 paise on Wednesday. The cost of 1 litre of diesel has touched Rs 86.98.

In Delhi, petrol is on the verge of crossing Rs 90, and diesel Rs 80 as fuel rates continue to rise sharply. Petrol costs Rs 89.54 per litre, and diesel Rs 79.95 per litre.

No country for opinions

Swara Bhasker asks, "Why would a State treat it's citizens, their dissent and their demands with such paranoid suspicion? One wonders why a government voted in on a thumping electoral mandate with 300+ seats in Parliament has become so scared of democratic procedures and values...?"

Ms Ravi's arrest and detention is "completely atrocious"

India activist Disha Ravi arrested over farmers' protest 'toolkit'.

Police said Disha Ravi was a "key conspirator" in the "formulation and dissemination" of the document. The "toolkit", which suggests ways of helping the farmers, was tweeted by prominent activist Greta Thunberg. Activists say Ms Ravi's arrest is a clear warning to those who want to show support to anti-government protests.

A 22-year-old Indian climate activist has been arrested after sharing a document intended to help farmers protest against new agricultural laws.

The farmers' protests mark the biggest challenge India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has faced. His government has offered to suspend the laws but the farmers want them replaced altogether.

Politicians, actors, academics, activists and influencers across the globe have condemned the arrest of a 21-year-old climate activist for allegedly being involved in sharing with Greta Thunberg a "toolkit" on social media related to the farmers' protest.

In a tweet, Congress leader P. Chidambaram said the "Indian state must be standing on very shaky foundations" if Disha Ravi was arrested. Meena Haeeis stated, "activists are being targeted and silenced by the government."

It is all beyond shocking! The GOI is dismantling Indian democracy. Each passing day it's stooping to a new low! Civil society must join hands to restore our republic.
