New York attack: Sikh man in US hailed as hero for helping arrest terror suspect


A Sikh man in the US is being hailed as a hero for helping the police capture an "armed and dangerous" Afghan-born American wanted for the weekend bombings in New York and New Jersey that injured 29 people.

Harinder Bains, the owner of a bar in Linden found 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami sleeping in the doorway of a bar he owns.

Bains said he was watching news on TV on his laptop from another business across the street.

At first, he thought he was some "drunk guy" resting in the vestibule but then recognised Rahami and called police.

"I'm just a regular citizen doing what every citizen should do. Cops are the real heroes, law enforcement are the real heroes," Bains said.

When officers responded, Rahami pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking an officer in the chest.

A foot chase ensued, during which Rahami shot at a police car, causing a bullet to graze another office in the face.

The chase ended when Rahami was shot multiple times.

He was taken to a hospital for surgery. Rahami was not initially cooperative with police who tried to interview him, a law enforcement official said.

Indian-American attorney Ravi Batra toldPTI that Bains "dared to honour his Oath of Citizenship to protect & defend the Constitution from enemies foreign and domestic - and it's turns out that the Chelsea Pressure Cooker Bomber suspect, a naturalised citizen, is caught by another immigrant, an Indian-American Hero-Sikh."

In a statement, the National Sikh Campaign said this was brave and courageous act by Bains.

"A Sikh helps police get to the terrorist involved in New York and New Jersey bombing over the weekend," it said.

How to Create an Exponential Mindset

Digital business models are a bit of a misnomer. It's not digital technology that defines them; it's their ability to create exponential value. The music and video industries, for example, weren't redefined by converting analog to digital formats. Just ask Sony about Minidisc players and Netflix about their DVD business.

In the last century, industrial business models were defined by their use of machines to create increasing returns to scale. Digital business models use network effects to create what Ray Kurzweil describes as accelerating returns to scale. The key difference is that industrial models are linear while digital models are exponential, as shown in the chart.

To create exponential value, it's imperative to first create an exponential mindset. The incremental mindset focuses on making something better, while the exponential mindset is makes something different. Incremental is satisfied with 10%. Exponential is out for 10X.

While others have written about how to design exponential strategies and organizations, I want to focus here on how to create an exponential mindset. My work with clients suggests that the incremental mindset is more deeply embedded than we might think. Unless you are conscious and diligent, you can end up with a strategy that looks digital (i.e. uses digital technology) but doesn't actually operate digitally (i.e. achieves accelerating returns).

The role of incremental and exponential mindsets vary in each phase of the business journey: launch, grow, and expand.

Launch: Vision and Uncertainty
In the launch phase of a business, the team needs to develop and refine the business model. The Lean Startup approach of test, iterate, and pivot is the right thing to do. But you also need the right way to think. Are you thinking about your business incrementally or exponentially?

The incremental mindset draws a straight line from the present to the future. A "good" incremental business plan enables you to see exactly how you will get from here to there. But exponential models are not straight. They are like a bend in the road that prevents you from seeing around the corner, except in this case the curve goes up.

Without an exponential mindset, Google would never have created such an ambitious vision as "organizing the world's information," Facebook would never have set out to "make the world more open and connected," and Airbnb to "create a world where all 7 Billion people can Belong Anywhere." Similarly, a group of innovative organizations in the public sector are out to solve global social issues by achieving "transformative scale."

In Maine they have an expression that "You can't get there from here." In the launch phase, you need to realize that an exponential strategy has inherent uncertainty. You can't know what things will look like on the other side of the curve. You can't draw a straight line from where you are to where you are going. There's no step-by-step plan. The exponential mindset helps you become comfortable with uncertainty and more ambitious with your vision.

Build: Courage and Patience
These days, many companies are able to get through the launch phase with an exponential mindset. They manage their uncertainty, take the leap, and start the journey despite being unable to see around the bend. Fear of disruption and envy of unicorns can be a powerful motivator. But then something happens. Or more precisely, something doesn't happen.

Take a look at the chart above. In the first part of the build phase, you don't see a lot of change. It's not until the second part when the line starts to bend. It's simply the nature of exponential change. Things happen very slowly before they happen very quickly. If this was the only world we knew, it wouldn't be a problem. But we were raised with an incremental mindset. So we can't help but compare the exponential path to the incremental path. And this creates a problem.

We are accustomed to measuring progress linearly and incrementally. If 30% of the time has gone by, we assume that we should be 30% of the way there. That's how things work in the physical world when we are traveling to a destination. But exponential models don't work that way.

What happens is that businesses run into something I call the "expectation gap," where the exponential strategy is at greatest risk from the incremental mindset. It's where many companies abandon the exponential model for the incremental.

I see this consistently on a micro scale in my own work. My workshops are designed with an exponential mindset to generate new ways of thinking about marketing, culture and strategy. Somewhere around a third of the way into a workshop, the leader invariably says something like "so when are we going to get something done?" The reason is that they are still operating with an incremental mindset. A third of the time has passed, but it seems like they are only 10% of the way to our destination. In fact, most of the progress happens once the curve starts to bend. Invariably by the end of the day the same people are remarking that they can't believe how much we got done in such a short period of time.

In your exponential journey, pay attention to when people get the most impatient for results. It's the point in the chart where there is the largest gap between incremental and exponential paths. This expectation gap is a risk to the business strategy because the impatience can be used by opponents or skeptics to convince stakeholders to jump from the exponential to the incremental. You will have the immediate relief of having "line of sight" once again and see steady progress. But you will also have given up the possibility of accelerating returns and the opportunity to keep up with customers and competitors. The exponential mindset helps you have the courage to persevere and the patience to see it through.

Grow: Agility and Control
In the third phase, you have managed the uncertainty of the early days, the impatience of the middle phase, and now you are firmly "in the curve." Growth is happening faster than you can handle. At this point, the incremental mindset is to try to rein things in and get things under control. But that would be a mistake. To sustain the accelerating returns, you need to shift your mindset about how to mobilize and manage resources.

The incremental mindset assumes that it takes more inputs to produce more outputs. So as growth starts to accelerate, teams start to look for more resources in proportion to the growth. But the addition of too many people or too many resources can "flood the engine" of growth. You need an exponential mindset to figure out how 1X additional input can create 10X additional output.

You also need to apply an exponential mindset to how you manage the resources you have. The incremental mindset about management is like creating a line of dominos. Everything needs to be highly coordinated with active oversight to make progress one step at a time. The exponential mindset is like this demonstration with ping pong balls in which things happen in parallel with a focus on the interactions among participants.

As I've written about separately, there is a way to let go without losing control. In the exponential mindset, managers replace control of people with control of principles. The use of doctrine to guide decision-making generates alignment, consistency and empowerment. But most leaders are accustomed to making decisions rather than empowering decisions. The anxiety from a loss of control can easily push companies off the exponential path back onto the incremental path. The exponential mindset helps to grow output faster than input, and empower teams to achieve both alignment and autonomy.

To summarize, digital business models require a shift from incremental to exponential. At the start, it takes vision and a leap of faith to commit to the unknown. In the early days, it takes courage and patience to build the foundation for growth even when results aren't yet apparent. When growth kicks in, agility comes from empowering others and letting go without losing control. In all of the stages, the challenge is to "unlearn" familiar ways of thinking and embrace the unfamiliar. But with a shift from the incremental to exponential mindset comes the opportunity for real innovation.

At a restaurant, a cockroach suddenly flew from somewhere and sat on a lady.

She started screaming out of fear.

With a panic stricken face and trembling voice, she started jumping, with both her hands desperately trying to get rid of the cockroach.

Her reaction was contagious, as everyone in her group also got panicky.

The lady finally managed to push the cockroach away but ...it landed on another lady in the group.

Now, it was the turn of the other lady in the group to continue the drama.

The waiter rushed forward to their rescue.

In the relay of throwing, the cockroach next fell upon the waiter.

The waiter stood firm, composed himself and observed the behavior of the cockroach on his shirt.

When he was confident enough, he grabbed it with his fingers and threw it out of the restaurant.

Sipping my coffee and watching the amusement, the antenna of my mind picked up a few thoughts and started wondering, was the cockroach responsible for their histrionic behavior?

If so, then why was the waiter not disturbed?

He handled it near to perfection, without any chaos.

At age 5 his father died.
At age 16 he quit school.
At age 17 he had already lost four jobs.
At age 18 he got married.
Between ages 18 and 22, he was a railroad conductor and failed.
He joined the army and washed out there.
He applied for law school he was rejected.
He became an insurance sales man and failed again.
At age 19 he became a father.
At age 20 his wife left him and took their baby daughter.
He became a cook and dishwasher in a small cafe.
He failed in an attempt to kidnap his own daughter, and eventually he convinced his wife to return home.
At age 65 he retired.
On the day of retirement he received a cheque from the government for $105.
He felt that its too less for him.
He decided to commit suicide, it wasn't worth living anymore; he had failed so much.
He sat under a tree writing his will, but instead, he wrote what he would have accomplished with his life. He realised there was much more that he hadn't done. There was one thing he could do better than anyone he knew. And that was how to cook.
So he borrowed $87 against his cheque and bought and fried up some chicken using his recipe, and went door to door to sell them to his neighbours in Kentucky.
Remember at age 65 he was ready to commit suicide.
But at the age of 88, Colonel Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Empire was a billionaire.
Moral of the story: Attitude. It's never too late to start all over.
MOST IMPORTANT: IT'S ALL ABOUT YOUR ATTITUDE. NEVER GIVE UP, NO MATTER HOW HARD IT GETS.
You have what it takes to be successful. Go for it and make a difference.

सकारात्मक चिंतन

एक राजा के पास कई हाथी थे,
लेकिन
एक हाथी बहुत शक्तिशाली था,
बहुत आज्ञाकारी,
समझदार व युद्ध-कौशल में निपुण था।
बहुत से युद्धों में वहभेजा गया था
और वह राजा को विजय दिलाकर वापस लौटा था,
इसलिए वह महाराज का सबसे प्रिय हाथी था।

समय गुजरता गया ...

और एक समय ऐसा भी आया,
जब वह वृद्ध दिखने लगा।


अब वह पहले की तरह कार्य नहीं कर पाता था।
इसलिए अब राजा उसे युद्ध क्षेत्र में भी नहीं भेजते थे।

एक दिन वह सरोवर में जल पीने के लिए गया, लेकिन वहीं कीचड़ में उसका पैर धँस गया और फिर धँसता ही चला गया।

उस हाथी ने बहुत कोशिश की,
लेकिन वह उस कीचड़ से स्वयं को नहीं निकाल पाया।

उसकी चिंघाड़ने की आवाज से लोगों को यह पता चल गया कि वह हाथी संकट में है।

हाथी के फँसने का समाचार राजा तक भी पहुँचा।

राजा समेत सभी लोग हाथी के आसपास इक्कठा हो गए और विभिन्न प्रकार के शारीरिक प्रयत्न उसे निकालने के लिए करने लगे।

लेकिन बहुत देर तक प्रयास करने के उपरांत कोई मार्ग
नहि निकला.

तब राजा के एक वरिष्ठ मंत्री ने बताया कि तथागत गौतम बुद्ध मार्गक्रमण कर रहे है तो क्यो ना तथागत गौतम बुद्ध से सलाह मांगि जाये.

राजा और सारा मंत्रीमंडल तथागत गौतम बुद्ध के पास गये और अनुरोध किया कि आप हमे इस बिकट परिस्थिती मे मार्गदर्शन करे.

तथागत गौतम बुद्ध ने सबके अनुरोध को स्वीकार किया और घटनास्थल का निरीक्षण किया और फिर राजा को सुझाव दिया कि सरोवर के चारों और युद्ध के नगाड़े बजाए जाएँ।

सुनने वालोँ को विचित्र लगा कि भला नगाड़े बजाने से वह फँसा हुआ हाथी बाहर कैसे निकलेगा, जो अनेक व्यक्तियों के शारीरिक प्रयत्न से बाहर निकल नहीं पाया।

आश्चर्यजनक रूप से जैसे ही युद्ध के नगाड़े बजने प्रारंभ हुए, वैसे ही उस मृतप्राय हाथी के हाव-भाव में परिवर्तन आने लगा।

पहले तो वह धीरे-धीरे करके खड़ा हुआ और फिर सबको हतप्रभ करते हुए स्वयं ही कीचड़ से बाहर निकल आया।

अब तथागत गौतम बुद्ध ने सबको स्पष्ट किया कि हाथी की शारीरिक क्षमता में कमी नहीं थी, आवश्यकता मात्र उसके अंदर उत्साह के संचार करने की थी।

हाथी की इस कहानी से यह स्पष्ट होता है कि यदि हमारे मन में एक बार उत्साह – उमंग जाग जाए तो फिर हमें कार्य करने की ऊर्जा स्वतः ही मिलने लगती है और कार्य के प्रति उत्साह का मनुष्य की उम्र से कोई संबंध नहीं रह जाता।

जीवन में उत्साह बनाए रखने के लिए यह आवश्यक है कि मनुष्य सकारात्मक चिंतन बनाए रखें और निराशा को हावी न होने दें।

कभी – कभी निरंतर मिलने वाली असफलताओं से व्यक्ति यह मान लेता है कि अब वह पहले की तरह कार्य नहीं कर सकता, लेकिन यह पूर्ण सच नहीं है.

"सकारात्मक सोच ही आदमी को "आदमी" बनाती है....
उसे अपनी मंजील तक ले जाती है!"

Ways to supercharge your packed lunch

Lunch is an important part of any man's day, so shouldn't it also be one of the best? Opt out of takeout food and make your own awesome lunch at home with these essential tips from a top chef who specialize in Spanish food. An expert in cooked meats – he gets extremely worked up about ham – here he shows you how to make your packed lunch the envy of the office.

1. Cling film is the enemy.
"Don't wrap your sandwich in cling film, it will make it sweaty. Instead, wrap it in parchment paper, which will give it a deli feel and let the air circulate. You can bring your lunch to work in a Tupperware box, but I prefer a sturdy paper bag – again, it lets the sandwich breathe."

2. Get saucy.
"I know it's obvious, but I love mayonnaise, especially aioli, which is the really garlicky variety. You should always use butter on your sandwiches as it not only adds flavor and texture, but it prevents sogginess. Another great addition is onions in balsamic vinegar – just chop them up and they'll add a sturdy base to your sandwich. Finally, mustard -- you can't go wrong."

3. Upgrade your meat.
"You won't get a finer ingredient than jamón ibérico, the daddy of all hams. It's made in Spain and cured for at least four years, often five. It adds complex flavors that go from savory to sweet in one mouthful, and it's incredibly moist. Try it with manchego cheese, also from Spain. Another underrated ingredient is smoked fish: break up some peppered mackerel and serve it with watercress."

4. Keep bread nice and simple.
"You might expect me to choose something really posh, but I think a really good sandwich loaf is hard to beat. A decent one that will hold everything together nicely. Another bread to try is sourdough, which I prefer to more fancy varieties you find in some delis. One thing to note: no matter what bread you use, a sandwich should be served at room temperature, never cold. You can put it in the fridge at work, but take it out 20 minutes before you eat it. It'll taste much better."

5. No bread? No problem.
"Some people don't want to eat too much bread, so if you're looking for an alternative to the sandwich, try a tortilla, or Spanish omelette. Just make it the night before, adding sweated onions, chorizo or sweet potatoes, and you'll have something you can easily eat at work. As it's firm, just snap a bit off and you're done."

6. Find the right spot to eat.
"Some people think you shouldn't eat at your desk, but it doesn't bother me. As my job involves rushing between restaurants, then it's quite relaxing to just sit there, have a chat and look at stuff online. But ideally, it's good to get away from your desk at some time. Go for a walk before you eat, you'll enjoy it more when you come back."

7. You get what you pay for (mostly).
